ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of loneliness on academic self-efficacy (ASE) and student engagement in the context of remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, as a boundary condition, we examined the role of intermediate ASE in the relationship between loneliness, student engagement, and perceived humor in learning. A total of 367 undergraduate students from six universities in Indonesia completed an online questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Macro Process version 4 to test the moderating mediation model hypothesis. As expected, the study results show that loneliness is negatively related to ASE and student engagement. ASE is proven to affect student engagement positively;concurrently, it plays an intermediate role in the link between loneliness and student engagement. Finally, humor had a significant moderating effect on learning in the tested model. This study contributes to the existing literature on loneliness and student engagement by uncovering the intermediate role of ASE. Drawing on the social cognitive theory (SCT) and instructional humor processing theory (IHTP), we explored how perceived humor in learning moderates the relationships between loneliness, ASE, and student engagement. © 2024, Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education. ABSTRACT

Online learning is seen to be the solution to education throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Instructional sessions and assessments are conducted in the virtual setting which affects instructors and students alike. Oral assessments like presentation sessions are conducted on teleconferencing platforms which bring different dimensions in pedagogy and online learning strategies employed by students. Thus, this study aimed to determine undergraduates perceptions of online and in-class presentations. These undergraduates went through remote learning sessions and were not physically campus bound. For this study, the mixed-method approach was adopted and a set of questionnaires with two open-ended questions was distributed online to 1187 Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) undergraduates who were enrolled in the English for Professional Communication (UHL2432) course for Semester 2, session 2020/2021. Quantitative data were collected, and the descriptive statistics were calculated. The findings revealed students mixed perceptions towards the effectiveness of applying delivery skills and elements of professionalism in online and in-class oral presentations. Furthermore, although findings have shown that students have adapted to online learning and preferred certain elements of oral presentation in a virtual environment, they also indicated that students preferred to learn oral presentations in a face-To-face classroom. Students mixed perceptions were due to challenges in aspects such as maintaining eye contact, projecting voice, using visual aids, gestures and postures as well as interacting with the audience virtually. The findings of this study will provide a useful guide for the enhancement and development of online teaching and learning methodologies. © 2023 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. ABSTRACT

The development of technology in the last decades made blended learning implemented wider, especially in the covid-19 pandemic last years. Online learning activities has some new issue to be defined. One of them is the difficulty of school engagement (disengagement). School counselors have the role of supporting student development tasks to avoid student disengagement. This research aims to measure the students' school engagement, especially in the blended learning context. This research design used a quantitative survey. Research subjects include students in the city of Malang. The instrument used is the school engagement inventory. The study results indicate that students with mid-levels of school engagement have slightly more numbers than students with high levels of school engagement. Support engagement is a finding in this study as the specific aspect of engagement in the blended learning model. The suggestion is a more practical assessment of the demographic conditions of students to test and get a more appropriate construct of support engagement. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Internal counselor competence refers to the metacognition skills to manage all their mental experiences and internal conditions. These are in the form of mind skills. In particular, in the industrial revolution 4.0 and the COVID-19 pandemic situation, online counselors face many unpredictable and unfamiliar conditions. This study aims to identify the state level of the counselor's mind skills during online counseling sessions. This research method uses survey research methods of 181 online counselors in various regions in Indonesia. A mind skills journal is the instrument used for data collection to assess the four levels of counselor metacognition (reflective, strategic, aware, and tacit). The analysis used basic statistics and graphs. The results showed the overall score of the mind skills level was 78.166%, which was in the strategic use level. The mind skills contribution can be counselor self-regulation, counselor assessment, verbalization, information visualization description, causal analysis, and predictive planning. Suggestions based on research results are the need for an alternative to improve mind skills through reflective learning of prospective counselors and reflective supervision activities of counselors in the field. © 2023, Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science. ABSTRACT

Immune system is one of topic in biology which considered as problematic by students and challenging for teachers in conveys them in online learning. Gaming learning is one alternative to ease and engage the students and teachers in understanding the immune system. To bring gaming learning of immune system as an intervention in teaching and learning, a prerequisites analysis needs to be run to understand the existing practices of teaching and learning on immune system, and the readiness of teachers and students on the intervention of gaming learning. The aim of this study was to determine the learning process of the immune system during the Covid-19 pandemic and explore teacher and students' perceptions and readiness to use the gaming learning. The basic interpretative studies were conducted by collecting data through interview to four biology teachers, and questionnaire to the students (N=387). The data was analysed descriptively. It is found that: 1) The online learning caused boredness due to the monotonous tools used by the teacher, 3) The teachers perceive that gaming learning can help students learn the concept of the immune system, eventhough they have lack of understanding and experiences on adopting the gaming learning. 4) The students are ready to accept gaming learning and have adequate facilities to support the learning, and. 5) The adventure game is the type of game that students like the most. The findings should be considered in designing the gaming learning on immune system in the future research. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Online learning causes student anxiety during the Covid-19 pandemic. Anticipatory guidance is a form of guidance provided for students to anticipate the occurrence of anxiety. However, the problem is that students in Indonesia consider learning assignments to be the cause of anxiety during online learning. This makes the reason that the importance of guidance for students in preventing anxiety so that online learning can be carried out effectively. The purpose of this research is to build an android-based application to anticipate the occurrence of anxiety for students that is easily accessible and understandable. This research method uses Research & Development (R&D). The subjects in this study were material experts, media experts, and students. The data collection tool used is in the form of a validation sheet to obtain an assessment of the validator or experts. The results show that after design validation by the three material experts an average score of 84.8 was very good and the validation of the three media experts obtained an average score of 72.14 in the good category. Based on the ten student opinions regarding anticipatory guidance on anxiety using an Android-based application, the score was very good in terms of appearance, ease of use of the application and material content related to material clarity, and language. Of the ten students' opinions regarding the android-based application, it gave a proper value to be used as anticipatory guidance on student anxiety during online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022 International Journal of Health Sciences.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The spread of COVID-19 is very fast because it is transmitted from human to human. Non-pharmaceutical control is one of the important actions in reducing the spread of COVID-19, such as the use of masks and physical distancing. This study aims to model COVID-19 by incorporating people''s habits as a non-pharmaceutical preventive measure. The model formed emphasizes the importance of preventing with masks and physical distancing. The implication of this action is that the infected population is decreasing, resulting in less interaction between the susceptible and the infected. In this case, the virus has not vanished from the community, but the use of masks in certain populations or subpopulations is lower than before, which can reduce mask waste in the environment. METHODS: This study expands on a previous MERS-CoV research model using the susceptible-exposed-infected-quarantine-recovery model by incorporating behavioral control, specifically the use of masks and physical distancing as preventive measures. The susceptible population that interacts with the carrier/exposed and infected population is used to calculate mask use. The susceptible population was divided into two subpopulations based on their willingness to wear masks. The following breakthrough is the application of the same system to the infected population, which is required to wear masks at all times during their self-isolation period. The model-generated equation system is a nonlinear system of differential equations. The developed model is examined by determining the equilibrium point and the basic reproduction number. FINDINGS: The model resulted an asymptotically stable disease-free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium. The disease-free stability is only examined if the compliance with physical distancing exceeds 0.55 and the compliance with the use of distancing exceeds 0.55. This compliance condition resulted in a decrease in basic reproduction number ranging from 0.48 to 0.07. The endemic stability is only investigated if compliance with physical distancing is 0.1 and compliance with use of distancing is 0.2. The endemic condition can arise if masks and physical separation are not used. Physical distancing compliance and mask use have values less than 0.1 and 0.2, respectively. CONCLUSION: The analysis of the equilibrium points and basic reproduction numbers, show that increasing compliance in carrying out the health protocol measures of physical distancing and mask use causes a decrease in the spread of COVID-19, so that the disease will disappear over time.

ABSTRACT

Land transport in rural areas are characterized by the abundance of road bends, varied road conditions, elevated terrains, and the far distance between each station. Such situations have rendered full-path drone delivery impossible, and thus deliveries using drones must inevitably be combined with land transportation in the whole process. Ever since the Covid-19 outbreak, there has been an unprecedentedly high demand for efficiency in the delivery of medical goods such as vaccines and medicines, especially in rural areas. Such measures prove indispensable in preventing the spread of the disease among all citizens. Conventionally, the abundance of road conditions, the length, and width of paths, and the characteristics of road bends, are considered and analyzed by human staff qualitatively using their experience and personal judgment before deciding on the best delivery path and the optimal network. To overcome the shortcomings of conventional methods, this article proposes a machine learning-based algorithm that considers all the different road conditions as well as the terrain elevations systematically and quantitatively to determine the best delivery path and construct the optimal delivery network system. When combined with drone delivery, our algorithm will also yield the most feasible position for the drone to be deployed and stationed to deliver the goods to the intended destinations, thereby creating a more comprehensive delivery network system. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 reported cases in Malaysia is increasing every day. The lab facilities for testing COVID-19 has almost reached their capacity. Traditionally, to detect the COVID-19, a swab test is used. This method will take some time and be costly. The swab test kits are very scarce, and the human resources to do this test are limited. Through modern technology, there is a probability of detecting positive COVID-19 using X-ray images with deep learning. In this paper, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) approach is used to detect Covid-19 through digital X-ray images. The 2D convolution kernel layer consists of three layers. The first layer has a 3 × 3 kernel, the second part has a 5 × 5 kernel, and the third part has a 7 × 7 kernel. Then, the output will be combined into one layer. Afterwards, the concatenated layer continued with another sequential process consisting of two convolution processes, ReLU and max pooling. Next, the model is then flattened, dropout and dense. A total of 2100 positive Covid-19 and negative Covid-19 images from Github and Kaggle databases have been used in this research. Based on the experiment done, the accuracy was almost 96%. © 2021 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The outbreak in 2020 of the pandemic COVID-19 has affected not only the health of populations but also economies worldwide. Unprecedented global travel restrictions and movement control orders have severely disrupted global tourism and the global economy overall. This study examines how COVID-19 is affecting tourists’ travel behaviour and their preferences in the pandemic recovery phase, with emphasis on Kinabalu Mountain National Park in Sabah, Malaysia. It investigates the direct relationships between Motivation (MV), Demographic Characteristics (DC) and Destination Image (DI) and Revisit Intention (RI), and the moderating role of Perceived Risk (PR) on the relationship between these variables and RI. Results show that all variables have a significant relationship with RI, and PR moderates the relationships between RI and MV, DI and PR, but not DC. The findings offer important insights for owners and managers of tourism firms, researchers and policymakers. Tourism firms should also be encouraged to improve MV, DC, DI and PR to improve RI. © 2021, Academy of Strategic Management Journal. All Rights Reserved.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic caused by the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) has had psychological and health impacts on people's lives around the world. On a psychological aspect, this pandemic has caused anxiety due to low mindfulness. To increase the potential of mindfulness, one of the ways taken is by counselor psychological intervention. The authors used an Islamic counseling approach to reduce anxiety and increase mindfulness. Therefore, the research was conducted using a quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control group design. Participants in this study were 14 students consisting of 7 students for each experimental and control group. Participants were invited after filling self-report the anxiety scale facing COVID-19 and indicated that they were in the high category. The data analyzed with the Wilcoxon sign rank test to determine the impact of before and after the intervention was given, then used the Mann Whitney to find out the mean differences between the experimental and control group, and the Rank Spearman to determine the correlation between mindfulness and anxiety. The results showed that Islamic counseling intervention is effective to increase mindfulness which impacted on reducing anxiety in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides, the results of correlation analysis using the Rank Spearman show that there is a correlation between mindfulness and anxiety. © Kadafi, A., Alfaiz, A., Ramli, M., Asri, D., & Finayanti, J. ABSTRACT

A signifcant concern of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is the dramatic decrease in the number of blood donation drives across Malaysia. The pandemic is putting a strain on the blood inventory and supply, especially to transfusion-dependent patients;i.e., thalassemia major, sickle cell disease and cancer patients. This is a retrospective cross-sectional study carried out at the Transfusion Medicine Unit, Hospital USM from December 2019 to April 2020. Data on blood donation and blood component usage were collected and tabulated three months (18th December 2019 to 17th March 2020) before movement control order (MCO) and during the frst phase of MCO (18th March to 17th April 2020). Whole blood units that were donated via mobile drives were predominantly affected with the number of blood donors in blood mobiles decreased by 80.7% during MCO. The decreasing pattern was due to the cancellation of 25 mobile drives, which targeted 1267 blood donors. Blood usage was also escalating down to 840 during the CO, which was due to no elective operations, admissions, or procedures done during the MCO. Routine blood donation and collection thus need to be resumed in less affected areas to meet the clinical needs with greater precaution against COVID-19 infections. © 2021, Penerbit UMT. ABSTRACT

The recent Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has caused significantdisruptions to the Malaysian tourism sector. The pandemic originated from Wuhan, China, and ithas spread throughout the world and caused respiratory illness with symptoms such as cough, fever, and difficulty in breathing. To prevent the spreading of this pandemic, numerous countries, including Malaysia, have enforced a lockdown approach to stop the chain of infection of spreading this new disease. The government-ordered lockdowns haveaffected the lives of the citizens, and at the same time, created economic collapse unemployment situation. The travel restrictions imposed by the Malaysian government to control the spreading of COVID-19 outbreak has caused Malaysia to lose at least 60 per cent of the tourism business by the end of 2020. To recover the tourism industry, the government has gradually opened tourist attractions to the public. However, with the uncertainty in the environment, visitors tend to be cautious in deciding to visit the attractions. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of motivationand image of destination on revisit intention during the post-COVID-19 pandemic recovery phase. Theresults from this study showed that the R square value of revisit intention was valued at 30.1%. This study provides scholars and practitioners with empirical evidence of revisit intention that contributes to the ecotourism industry. This study building on the Southeast Asian region (non-western country), and, this study extends the literature in the tourism market context and specifically, has implications for ecotourism, specifically national parks. © 2020 Ubiquity Press.
